About the Learning Connection: 14

The Learning Connection was developed by the Indiana Department of Education as part of a federal grant for developing statewide data systems. The requirements for the system stemmed from several of IDOE’s legacy systems including the smartDESKTOP.

The Learning Connection plays a prominent role in supporting the implementation of IDOE’s strategic initiatives. By providing data, resources, and tools for school improvement, the functionality of the Learning Connection can be leveraged across IDOE initiatives aimed at improving student learning. Here is a listing of features of the Learning Connection.

While various schools will employ the Learning Connection in different ways depending on the availability of existing technologies, the system offers the following four distinct benefits to every teacher:

  1. Access to longitudinal student-level data from numerous sources to support instructional decisions and increase student achievement;
  2. Opportunities to collaborate with colleagues from across the state through the communication tools in the communities;
  3. Online lesson planning and curriculum design capabilities; and,
  4. A common point of access for information from IDOE.

Accessing the Learning Connection

Any Educator interested in designing lessons, assessments aligned to standards, or wishing to collaborate and connect with other educators can register for an account.

Schools and corporations can utilize the Learning Connection to provide their staff access to student-level achievement data from the Indiana Department of Education. Complete this Corporation Admin Approval form and fax this to the number on the form in order to name the local Learning Connection administrator and obtain the first account for your corporation.

Roadmap

The road map for the Learning Connection is a work in progress. Development priorities along with our regular production schedule are provided below.

  • Schedule of Releases - The Learning Connection is maintained and enhanced through a regular schedule of releases.
  • Data Access and Reporting - Future data sources to be included in the Learning Connection are listed below:
    • Acuity Assessment Data
    • Wireless Generation/DIBELS Data
    • Alternative Assessment (ISTAR)
    • Student Demographic Data
    • ACT/SAT
    • Teacher and Principal Evaluation Data
    • District-Level Assessment Data (such as NWEA, Terra Nova, etc.)
    • Post-Secondary Feedback Data
    • Advanced Placement (AP) Participation
  • Development Priorities - The following priorities will assist with implementation of new features for Learning Connection:
    • Platform for IDOE communication with the field
    • Statewide collaboration engine (not the last collaborative tool that anyone will need but a common tool available for everyone)
    • Role-based access to student data (should continue to pursue a fully developed back-pack of data on student achievement while increasing the richness and power of the reports available and streamlining the process and timeline for exposing data)
    • Single point of access for enterprise systems provided to the field (use the login as much as possible to provide role-based access to systems that we bolt onto the LC or access through the LC)
